THE ENGINEERED RACE

Adrián
Moreno.

VP of Technology
Worksome · Copenhagen, Denmark

Technology, people, and the long game.

From building software on the Galician coast to leading engineering organizations across three countries. One continuous course; different ways of moving forward.

One craft. A journey beginning on Galicia’s water.

Explore the course

Born in Madrid. Engineering roots in Galicia.

[2007–2014] // Santiago de Compostela, ES

01 / SWIM · Galicia

Learning to swim.

Galicia shaped my engineering before I moved abroad. From writing code to owning its consequences, then to co-founding a company.

Leaving Galicia, carrying the foundations forward.

CRAFT → OWNERSHIP

  1. [2007-2011] // ROLE: PROGRAMMER_ANALYST

    Bahia Software

First job as software engineer My career started in a local software consultancy company, based in Santiago de Compostela. With the main customers being large public entities and some Galician large companies, the experience was very useful to know the best …

  2. [2011] // ROLE: PROGRAMMER_ANALYST

    Coremain

Contact with enterprise private project After the stay at Bahía I wanted to check if the knowledge that I was gaining would be applicable in other companies, and I could help also setup new teams in a different environment. At Coremain I had a fruitful stay, …

  3. [2011-2015] // ROLE: CO-FOUNDER_&_TECHNICAL_LEAD

    Zadia Software

Co-founder and technical lead At Zadia I co-Founded and bootstrapped a software development studio. From its origin as a part time job, to leading and coordinating a team of 5 engineers on the technical side. Revenue-wise, we were doubling the revenue every …

Ownership extends past the code I write.

[2014 → 2015] // ES → NL
Amsterdam // 52°22′N / 4°54′E

T1 / Transition

From immersion to intention.

A new country. A new market. A chance to start afresh. I took the engineering discipline with me — and left room to reconsider the assumptions.

Across open water, towards Amsterdam’s canals.

[2015–2021] // Amsterdam, NL
52°22′N / 4°54′E

02 / BIKE · Amsterdam

The long work.

From writing software to shaping the teams and decisions around it. The shift was not simply more responsibility; it was different work.

Through Amsterdam, with the same craft and a wider purpose.

CRAFT → TEAM

  1. [2015] // ROLE: SENIOR_MOBILE_APPS_DEVELOPER_(IOS_&_ANDROID)

    The Mobile Company

First job abroad By 2015 I was looking for a life change - and this was accompanied by a professional “reinvention”. After years growing Zadia together with my co-founder and partner, I exited the venture with the aim of starting afresh in a new …

  2. [2015-2017] // ROLE: CTO

    Pocket Media

Led the technology org (~15 FTE) of a mobile advertising agency as part of the Management Team — defining strategy, product roadmap, hiring and execution. Delivered high-scale mobile and web platforms for targeted advertising and near-real-time big data reporting.

  3. [2017-2019] // ROLE: TECHNICAL_LEAD

    Emakina.NL

Technical Lead on the agency's largest contract — an international e-commerce, CRM and service platform in the Salesforce ecosystem (SFCC, Service Cloud, Mulesoft). Oversaw enterprise architecture, accessibility, technical scoping and team coaching; partnered with Marketing on e-commerce KPIs and ad spend.

  4. [2019-2021] // ROLE: TECHNICAL_LEAD_→_ENGINEERING_MANAGER

    VanMoof

Insourced the e-commerce and subscription platform for a Direct-to-Consumer brand, integrating ERP, CRM and customer-facing portals across the vertically-integrated experience. Led and coached internal and external teams while structuring engineering through the hyper-growth phase.

Management is a discipline alongside engineering, not a promotion out of it.

[2021] // NL → DK
Copenhagen // 55°40′N / 12°34′E

T2 / Transition

Change the measure.

From Amsterdam to Copenhagen. The course widened from leading engineering work to thinking about how an organization supports it. Different responsibilities ask different questions.

Leaving the canals for Copenhagen’s harbour.

[2021–] // Copenhagen, DK

03 / RUN · Copenhagen

Ideas carried forward.

Teams, technical direction, and the organizational decisions around them. A wider remit — and a renewed focus on helping people do their best work.

Copenhagen comes alongside.

TEAM → ORGANIZATION

  1. [2021-2025] // ROLE: ENGINEERING_MANAGER_→_VP_OF_ENGINEERING_&_TRIBE_LEAD

    SumUp

Grew through three levels of scope (EM → Director → VP) over four years, ending with P&L responsibility for the Invoices & Accounting tribe — ~30 FTE across 4 squads, delivering mobile and web experiences inside the SumUp SuperApp. In parallel led the global Incident Response process across Engineering, Risk, Compliance and Operations (~900 FTEs).

  2. [2025-present] // ROLE: HEAD_OF_ENGINEERING_→_VP_OF_TECHNOLOGY

    Worksome

VP of Technology reporting to the CTO. Lead a ~10-person Product, Engineering and Design team, aligning business, product and engineering execution so the company scales sustainably.

Direction should help teams make decisions without depending on one person.

  1. Ship the org chart you need, not the one you inherited.

Structure is a tool that follows strategy, not something to preserve for its own sake.

  2. Technical direction is a service to the team, not a trophy for the leader.

I want the team to be able to explain an architecture decision without me in the room.

  3. Trust compounds faster than velocity.

The trust that sustains delivery matters more than speed at the expense of the team.

Finish // Next: conversation

The next leg starts with a conversation.

Engineering leadership, building teams, or comparing notes on marathon training. There is always more to learn.

Alongside in Copenhagen. Ready for the next conversation.
